The reviews on early showings of the eagerly anticipated Swallows & Amazons re-make are starting to trickle out. It has got to be said that not all are convinced that the vision of ‘capturing the imagination of the Harry Potter generation’ will be realised with this spiced up, ‘white-knuckle-ride adventure’ version of the treasured Arthur Ransome novel.
‘Unlike other films, ‘Swallows and Amazons’ is within children’s reach,’ I was told last weekend. It’s true any child can pretend that their bed is a sailing dinghy taking them out to a deserted island where they can camp.
A new Swallows and Amazons film, based on Arthur Ransome’s children’s outdoor adventure tale, is due for release on August 19. But how will it measure up to the 1974 original?
